Key Information

The Equality for Women and Girls portfolio supports efforts to advance gender equality and human rights for women, girls, and gender-diverse people in Central America and the United States. The program is grounded in the recognition that gender equality is essential to social well-being, economic growth, and poverty reduction, and that women and girls continue to face significant barriers to education, health care, safety, and justice.

In Central America, the program focuses on countries where girls and women experience severe educational exclusion, early pregnancy, and high rates of gender-based violence. It supports locally based and grassroots organizations working to expand access to quality education, promote girls’ retention and completion of secondary school, improve sexual and reproductive health knowledge and services, and shift harmful gender norms at the community and policy levels. Many grantees operate in rural or low-income areas and work directly with adolescents, families, educators, and community leaders.

Across both regions, the program prioritizes community-based, youth-led, and feminist organizations with strong local knowledge. Grantmaking supports direct educational and health services, leadership development for girls and young women, public policy advocacy, and network and coalition building. Through long-term and flexible funding, the program seeks to strengthen movements for gender equality, empower girls and women, and address structural and social barriers that limit educational and life opportunities.
