Key Information

The development objective of General Education Quality Improvement Program for Equity Project for Ethiopia is to improve internal efficiency, equitable access, and quality in general education (O-Class to Grade 12). This restructuring requires change in disbursements arrangements. The program provides annual grants for school improvement programmes, teacher training and licensing, and the development of new policies on curriculum. The program development objective (PDO)  is to improve internal efficiency, equitable access, and quality in general education (O-class to Grade 12). The Program focuses on four result areas: (i) improving internal efficiency (transition rates of Grades 1 to 2 and completion rates of Grade 5); (ii) improving equitable access (girls, emerging regions, and students with special educational needs); (iii) improving quality (student learning outcomes in mother tongues at Grade 2 and English and Mathematics at Grade 8); and (iv) system strengthening for planning, policy formulation and reform. GEQIP-E is the flagship program of the ministry of Education (MoE). The GEQIP series have been instrumental in the past decade to support the national education policy and strategy of Education Sector Development Program (ESDP). The Program was restructured five times. Two additional financing (AF) were added to the program: (i) AF1 of US$122.5 million from GPE, which became effective on April 13, 2021; and (ii) AF2 of US$79.5 million from the International Development Association (IDA), GPE and Denmark, which became effective on October 29, 2021.
