Description

The Women's Association of Tigray (WAT) has extensive experience implementing large-scale, multi-sectoral projects and mobilizing its membership across Tigray and the global Tigrayan diaspora. Ending violence against women and girls (EVAWG) has been a longstanding component of its mission, and for more than a decade, the association has implemented interventions to address harmful traditional practices and other drivers of gender-based violence through community awareness and advocacy initiatives.

WAT currently implements multiple projects focused on gender-based violence prevention, protection, and survivor reintegration, including psychosocial support, legal aid, livelihood recovery, and community mobilization. The association operates four safe houses in Mekelle, Maichew, Adigrat, and Axum, as well as six Women and Girls Safe Spaces across Mekelle Zone and the Eastern Zone. These centers provide integrated services, including medical and psychosocial support, legal assistance, referral coordination, and livelihood training for survivors of violence. Since 2020, these services have reached approximately 5,000 women and girls through safe houses and nearly 7,000 additional participants through WGSS programming.
